Under the guidance of the Publicity Department of the CPC Jinan Municipal Committee, Jinan International Communication Center has meticulously planned and launched the high-end bilingual interview series City of Springs | Visionaries’ Echo. This series aims to establish a platform for high-level dialogue, inviting iconic figures from around the world to engage in in-depth discussions on global hot topics, the changes of the times, and Jinan’s future development, with the goal of achieving the vision of “exploring Jinan with a global perspective”.

Alfred Hornung, member of the Academy of Europe, Professor at Mainz University, and President of the German Association for American Studies, has been invited by Shandong University to serve as a part-time chair professor. Having visited Jinan three times, he describes it as a poetic paradise where springs and lakes coexist in perfect harmony, making it an unforgettable destination.

Reflecting on his impression of Jinan, Hornung shared that stepping into Baotu Spring Park felt like transitioning from an urban setting into a small water-filled paradise. He marveled at the intricate layout and tranquil atmosphere of Jinan’s gardens. Having previously studied Ming Dynasty Chinese garden culture, Hornung observed that the historical integration of natural landscapes and human-made scenery is mirrored in Jinan today. “Back then, clear waters teemed with freely swimming fish, birds soared in the sky, and the landscape offered countless subjects worthy of study. Here, you can take a stroll, meditate, and reflect on the essence of life and the world. To me, this is a harmonious masterpiece,” he remarked.

Beyond its natural beauty, Hornung was also deeply impressed by Jinan’s rich history and academic environment. His three visits and extensive reading on the city have given him a deep appreciation of its over 2,000 years of cultural heritage. He specifically noted Jinan’s many universities, which contribute to a strong academic atmosphere.

Against the backdrop of globalization, Hornung offered unique insights into how Jinan can enhance its international engagement. He believes that the city's wealth of intangible cultural heritage serves as a crucial gateway for showcasing its charm to the world. “Particularly those UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage items should be introduced to the global stage through diverse communication channels, allowing the world to better understand the cultural essence of Jinan,” he emphasized.
Hornung concluded that Jinan is not only renowned for its spring culture but also for its unique fusion of scholarship and tradition, which continues to capture global attention. He is confident that as Jinan deepens its cultural outreach on the international stage, the city of springs will play an increasingly significant role in global exchanges.
